Fruits Basket – Toshiyuki Morikawa (Voice of Kazuma Sohma) Animate Interview

This is a translation of Toshiyuki Morikawa’s interview with Animate.

Please tell us about any scenes, lines, or favorite scenes that grabbed your attention in The Final.

I wouldn’t say that the final scenes sums it up for me. But rather, as I grow older, the more easily I’m moved to tears. Even I’ve realized that I’m an old man now. I’m sure the Fruba fans who are around my generation get it.

I know that the recording format was different from the previous seasons, but how was the post-recording process? What did you pay attention to in terms of direction and acting throughout the entire season?

I recorded a lot of my scenes alone and I read my lines while playing back the voice of my co-stars in my mind. I think it’s ideal to record with everyone together.

But the fact that we were able to record it without any problems is all thanks to the staff. I am very grateful.

Every time I see Kazuma look at Kyo, it warms my heart. To you, what kind of person is Kazuma Sohma?

He’s a very mature and well-developed person. I think he’s a character surrounded by love because he has been through so much in his life.

Please tell us what you realized and learned through Fruits Basket and the role of Kazuma Sohma. Also, what do you think is the most attractive thing about Fruits Basket that makes it loved by people of all ages?

I think this work of fiction is a masterpiece that teaches us the important things we need to live. It’s about accepting that everyone’s heart is different and to embrace them with kindness.

Now that the Final has arrived, please give us a message from yourself to the character you played, and also to Kyo Sohma who is like a son to you.

I’ve learned a lot from you. I respect you as a person, and your open-mindedness and receptiveness will gradually change the people around you.

And Kyo, you’ll always be my child but remember to find happiness (smiles)
